Historically, this Sinhala term was used as a classification for a eunuch or an intersex person. In modern street usage, however, it has evolved into a harsh homophobic slur operating exactly like the English word "faggot." People use it aggressively to attack a person's sexuality or masculinity. Because of its deeply derogatory roots, it remains completely unacceptable in polite society and carries heavy weight as a fighting word that usually escalates a physical conflict immediately.

Beyond its direct use as a homophobic slur, angry individuals frequently throw the word around during street fights, arguments, or road rage incidents as a severe attack on a man's courage. In these heated contexts, it labels someone as a massive coward, a weakling, or a person who lacks a spine. Even when rough crowds use it casually to mock a friend who backs down from a challenge, it remains a highly volatile and deeply offensive word.

Examples

Person A: "That guy just scratched your car and drove away without looking back!"
Person B (Extreme Anger): "මහ පොන්නයෙක් බං ඌ (Maha ponnayek ban u / He is a massive coward, bro), he did not even have the guts to stop."
Person A: "I really do not want to jump into the lake from this bridge, it looks way too high."
Person B (Toxic Mockery): "පොන්නයෙක් නොවී පැනපන් බං (Ponnayek nowi panapan ban / Do not be a sissy, just jump in bro)."
